My Schedule
Hi Everyone!
I’ve had lots of requests asking about how I get everything done in a day, so I thought I would post my schedule and show you:
8:00-8:10 students arrive
8:10-8:15 announcements
8:20-8:50 we do calendar and update our binders
8:50-9:45 Morning Message, Shared Reading w/ Big Books, Predictable Chart
9:45-10:25 Literacy Work Stations (I also do assessments during this time or work with small groups, my assistant works with a small group daily during this time)
10:30-11:00 Lunch
11:00-11:30 Recess
11:30-11:40 Quiet Rest time
11:40-12:05 Math
12:05-12:25 Science (this would be the time we would do experiments, because 9 times out of 10, I’ve picked a Science themed big book for Shared Reading, or have some way to tie it in)
12:25-12:50 Writer’s Workshop
12:50-1:25 Specials
1:30 Snack
1:45 Pack-up then Discovery time
2:10 cleanup
2:15 car pick up dismissal
2:20 bus dismissal
I hope this helps show how I get everything done–it’s all about using your time in the best possible way, am I flexible in this schedule!? YES!! I have to be!

Do your students sit gathered on the carpet for the entire 8:50-9:45 time? My kindergarten kids can barely make it through 15 minutes sitting on the carpet.

Believe it or not they do sit for that long. We are changing activities about every 10-15 minutes, so that helps. My ultimate goal in doing this is to get them prepared for 1st grade. I gradually work them up to this. At the beginning of the year, they are sitting for maybe 15 minutes max. I alternate between an activity at their seat and a large group activity. At this point in the year, they are more than able to do this and as long as I let them stretch or get a drink about 1/2 way through, they are just fine and do very well retaining the information I’ve shared.

I was wondering- what do you do during your 10 minutes of quiet time? I have about 15 minutes allotted for this and some students are never really “resting”.

Lately, I have had the children just putting their heads down and listening to meditation music–it helps a lot as we get ready to focus for Math, Science, and Writing in the afternoon (it happens right after recess). They just get to mellow out for a little while and listen to the music! 🙂 I have a great CD with rainforest sounds and music and the kids just love listening to the different kinds of animals. I also want to help them get ready for 1st grade, so we will listen to the music at different “no talking” times throughout the day, during writing, math and several other times. They can talk and be social for 5-10 minutes, then we go to no talking. I get better quality work, finished faster this way as well, because they can not talk, they focus so intently on their work! 🙂

What about free play time? Don’t you think they need to play.

They have PLENTY of time to play each day…during LWS they are essentially playing, then they have recess, a specials class everyday, and at the end of the day they have 45 minutes of free play at the centers in our classroom.

Hi Danette,
My kids have a different schedule this year than from the 2009 schedule you looked at. For the past two years, we’ve had at least 30 minutes of play at the end of each day. Our standards are so rigorous, that’s all the time we can have sad as it is!! We are happy with our 30 minutes In addition to our two work station times during the day.
