Math Common Core Standards
I shared in a post last week, how to access the basic scope and sequence we are using in Indiana. I created a document back in June last year that I carry with me everywhere to help me wrap my head around what I’m supposed to teach when. When I created this document, we (I) had just attended some PD provided by our Math Coaches and had been given several new resources to help with the implementation of the Common Core standards for Math. These resources are in addition to our adopted text of Math Their Way. I’m going to share this with you below because it’s been working for me. I know this is the order of the standards in Indiana, but I do not know if other states have chosen to follow the same order (it seems logical that they would considering how these standards build on each other–but nothing is ever logical!). On the left side you will see the standards and on the right, activities that I found out of the resources we were given (they are listed on the last page of the document) that helped me to teach these standards.
I hope you find this helpful and can at least adapt this to your states.

THANKS so much! I also teach in Indiana and implemented CCS. It has been a year of change for sure. I really appreciate connecting with someone going through this as well. I am a MTW instructor, yet my district adopted Envisions for math. I still use MTW, MPerspectives & Debbie Diller. Shari Sloane also has some great math ideas that fit in great. Check her out. There’s an APP available for your iPod, iPod Touch or smartphone that you’ll have with you wherever you go! (when the mood strikes) Just search for ‘common core math’ in the App Store.

I did see the app last year an almost downloaded it, but decided seeing them at school was enough! 🙂

Thanks for the information. I like your “cheat sheet”. I’m in SC and we are moving into CC implementation. It’s not a done deal, but our district wants to be setting on go when the decision is final. Our plan is to begin implementation of math in K5-2nd next year. We don’t use MTW (I used it back in the olden days) so many of the activities you’ve listed are unfamiliar to me, but just seeing your sequence is very helpful! Thanks for sharing.

What do you think about Envisions? We are going to look at it for possible adoption.

I really like the Envision Math program. That was our first choice for our math adoption last year but there were more votes for Math Their Way. I am friends with our Envision rep so I got samples of many of the items for Kindergarten and I really like them.

From the choices we were given, Envision met the needs of our K-4 building. However, the work book pages are overwhelming. We still do tons of MTW & hands on activities. The workbook pages are sent home for practice and reinforcement.

I would agree about the workmats pages. Our 1st – 5th did adopt it and I can’t tell you how many workmats are sent home with my own 2nd grader each week.

Love this! It is just what I was looking for. My collegue was interested in a first grade guide, do you know where she can look for one or what resources did you use when making this? Thanks for all you help!

I made this one in word just using the resources I’d been handed. I used the table of contents in each book to find activites that fit. The resources almost have to be books or websites you know or have so that you can use them. I listed the activites from the books I had so that it made lesson planning a little easier!

Hi Kristen! I just found your chart associating different curricula with CCSS. As I’m switching to kdg. next year, and have some very low special education students, I know I want to use Math their way and have been searching for a correlation between MTW and CCSS. I appreciate the work you put in to putting this together! Since I don’t teach in Indiana, could you please clarify what the curriculum acronyms stand for (DNC, MWS, etc.). Thank you!
