Community Helpers

One last new thing today and then I’m going to bed! 🙂  When we return from Winter Break, we will begin a 6 week long unit about community helpers and government (talking about how we organize ourselves in different ways) as part of our upcoming IB unit.  I decided to create some new community helper cards that can be used in at least 5 different ways:

1)After printing out, laminate for durability and then cut each picture card in ½ left to right.  The children can match the top half of the community helper to the bottom half. Additionally, you can add small pieces of magnet to the back of the ½’s and the children can match the pictures on a magnetic surface.
2)Again, print out the pictures and laminate for durability.  The children can match the community helper to their vehicle (note: the teacher and the doctor do not have vehicles).  You could also do this in a pocket chart or place magnets on the back and the children can use them on a magnetic surface.
3)These cards can also be used for children to vote for their favorite community helper or vehicle.
4)Puzzles can be created out of each picture and the children can put the pieces back together to create a whole picture.
5)Use the vehicle pictures to start a discussion as to why each community helper has a specific kind of vehicle.
Here is a sample of what the cards look like:
