Community Helpers

One last new thing today and then I’m going to bed! 🙂  When we return from Winter Break, we will begin a 6 week long unit about community helpers and government (talking about how we organize ourselves in different ways) as part of our upcoming IB unit.  I decided to create some new community helper cards that can be used in at least 5 different ways:

1)After printing out, laminate for durability and then cut each picture card in ½ left to right.  The children can match the top half of the community helper to the bottom half. Additionally, you can add small pieces of magnet to the back of the ½’s and the children can match the pictures on a magnetic surface.
2)Again, print out the pictures and laminate for durability.  The children can match the community helper to their vehicle (note: the teacher and the doctor do not have vehicles).  You could also do this in a pocket chart or place magnets on the back and the children can use them on a magnetic surface.
3)These cards can also be used for children to vote for their favorite community helper or vehicle.
4)Puzzles can be created out of each picture and the children can put the pieces back together to create a whole picture.
5)Use the vehicle pictures to start a discussion as to why each community helper has a specific kind of vehicle.
Here is a sample of what the cards look like:

Mouse Paint

I saw two of my students acting out Mouse Paint at our Drama Work Station and it was awfully cute, so I took a picture:

It was so sweet, they were so into telling the story and had set up the props exactly in the same order I had when I modeled it for them–adorable! 🙂

Also, I made my Mouse Paint retelling cards into magnets for Magnet Work Station.  It was a quick and easy thing to add to this station and the kids are having fun telling the story!

I got this magnetic board at IKEA for $9.99 on clearance when I went last summer.  I’m not sure if they still have them, but you could always use an oil pan! 🙂

Sometimes…

all you have to do is ask!  I was running out of new ideas to put in my Magnet Work Station area and I told my kiddos this one day.  I told them I saw they were getting bored with what was there and I didn’t have any ideas as to what I could put there next.  They said, “We have an idea!”.  We are learning about community helpers so how about something to do with community helpers.  We would like pictures of community helpers with speech bubbles so that we can match them with each other.  I never would have come up with that and it has provided a much needed new activity and keeps them busy. 🙂  They are reading the words on the speech bubbles and are having so much fun matching them up with the community helpers.  I found some community helper clip art on the internet (through a google search) and printed them out and laminated them.  I then used the speech bubble clip art in Word and made enough for each helper.  I then laminated them and wrote “I am a _(insert community helper name here)___”.  I stuck magnets on the back of them and we started having fun!

Now, I will have to dream up something to go along with our Sharing the Planet unit…I should just ask the kids! 🙂
